"Bray" is a death metal band from Indonesia. "Bray had been active from 2009 to 2015 but are currently on hold. The band has released one E.P. in 2012 titled, "Enemy of the Darkness". This E.P. is more unique than your typical death metal album. The first thing to be noted is the use of complex rhythms from guitar in conjunction with simpler drums. The guitars seem to play on the back of the note creating an almost dragging resistance to the drums tight forward motion that just works. The vocals are different as well. The vocal style is deep and guttural but aren't so harsh that you can't understand the vocalist. It is similar to the vocalist of "Nervosa" except instead of being harsher and higher pitched, its deeper and guttural. Riff wise the E.P. isn't something to jump at as ground breaking. It conveys, for the most part pretty basic death metal riffs. There are a good few that are pretty unique, such as the ones which create the dragging feel which I mentioned earlier. You can hear a lot of influence from "Cannibal Corpse" from the band. A huge positive for the band is that even though it has a distinct style, every track is different. Like, NOTICEABLY different. A big contributor to that is the fact that there is a slight style change towards the last half of the E.P. While the band keeps its brutal riffs and vocals and dragging style, it becomes more melodic. The band incorporates these melodies typically in the bridges, interludes, and especially solos. It creates a nice trade off from the rest of the riffs, however it is hard to become fatigued by them. This band is a really great band overall, however it is sad they only have one E.P. Its riffs are great, it presents a few new styles that would be great to here more of, and it just produces great tracks. However it doesn't have anything extraordinary and its pretty short. In conclusion, I give it a 7.5/10. I'll definitely be listening to these guys again.
